Program Overview
Looking for an impactful career at the intersection of technology and society? At RPI, you’ll learn to analyze how scientific knowledge is produced, how technologies shape everyday life, and how innovation intersects with issues of justice, sustainability, and public policy. You will hone these skills through department-supported internship opportunities in community and government organizations.
What You’ll Do:
- Investigate historical and emerging issues in science, technology, and medicine.
- Integrate diverse perspectives on innovation, from areas such as design, policy, engineering, social sciences, and public health.
- Write a thesis or complete a capstone internship.
- Communicate complex ideas effectively to both specialized and general audiences.

Admissions
Students pursuing a Ph.D. in STS at Rensselaer can complete the M.S. in STS as part of their progress toward Ph.D. completion. Additionally, students pursuing a B.S. at Rensselaer may apply to complete an Accelerated Master’s in STS. We are not accepting external applications for admission to the M.S. in STS program at this time.
