Program Overview
Elevate your RPI degree with graduate-level work that strengthens your analytical, writing, and project design skills. In just one extra year studying the human dimensions of science and technology, you’ll gain sharper analytical skills, deeper research experience, and a competitive edge for careers in policy, design, engineering, sustainability, and beyond. Plus, you’ll hone your new skills through department-supported internship opportunities in community and government organizations.
What You’ll Do:
- Investigate historical and emerging issues in science, technology, and medicine.
- Integrate diverse perspectives on innovation, from areas such as design, policy, engineering, social sciences, and public health.
- Write a thesis or complete a capstone internship.
- Communicate complex ideas effectively to both specialized and general audiences.

Admissions
The co-terminal M.S. is designed for academically strong Rensselaer students pursuing an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology and Society, Sustainability Studies, or Design, Innovation, and Society, and who wish to continue their studies toward a master’s degree. Students take graduate STS courses during their fourth and fifth years of study at Rensselaer.

Students who successfully complete this program will be able to engage in the following interlocking practices:
- Apply concepts that demonstrate knowledge about the mutual shaping of society, science and technology.
- Analyze, compare, and show critical understanding within chosen research focus.
- Design and articulate research problems and conduct original research.
- Communicate effectively to specialized and general audiences.

After Graduation
Graduates of the M.S. in STS may enter directly into the Ph.D. program on the recommendation of the Admissions & Awards Committee and with the approval of the Graduate Program Director
