Multiple Open-Rank Tenure Track Positions – STS and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning

The Department of Science & Technology Studies (STS) in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is part of the search for multiple open-rank, tenure track positions at the intersections of STS and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) to begin Fall 2022.

Ideal candidates for an STS-AI/ML position will be critical STS scholars who are enthusiastic about pursuing joint and collaborative research with AI/ML developers and practitioners, as well as contributing to the STS Department’s broader commitments to social justice and the design of alternative futures. The STS Department features a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary researchers, including historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and media studies scholars. Applicants must have a PhD, EdD, or foreign degree equivalent at the time of appointment.

STS research areas of interest for this hire include, but are not limited to:

• Democracy, and Public Policy
• Extended, Embodied, and/or Distributed Cognition
• Ethics
• Intersections of Inequality
• Sustainability & Climate Science
• The Internet of Things & Edge Computing
• Power, Cybersecurity, and Surveillance

The Department of Science and Technology Studies offers undergraduate programs in STS, Sustainability Studies, and Design, Innovation & Society and graduate programs at the M.S. and Ph.D. level.
