Alexander Hiland

Alexander Hiland Ph.D is a Senior Lecturer in Communication & Media. After earning his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 2017 he served as the Assistant Director of Debate at James Madison University and the Director of Forensics (speech and debate) at Texas Tech University. Dr. Hiland comes to RPI with 14 years of experience coaching students in competitive public speaking events and 11 years of teaching at the collegiate level. In the 2022-2023 Academic Year Dr. Hiland will be teaching Public Speaking and Communication Theory & Practice.

Andrew Fitzgerald

Andy Fitzgerald is an Assistant Professor of Communication & Media at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research and teaching expertise include critical communication and cultural studies, technology and audience studies, media theory, and global media ethics. Fitzgerald is currently starting a lab at RPI to use the "Screenomics" screen-capture research framework that collects screenshots of participants devices every few seconds for longitudinal studies to conduct critical digital audience and mobile user studies.

The minor in Strategic Communication is designed to train versatile, critical, and self-possessed communicators. Students who successfully complete this minor will demonstrate the ability to make focused, audience-appropriate arguments and communicate effectively across diverse rhetorical, sociocultural, and disciplinary contexts.

The Writing minor offers students the opportunity to write in a variety of genres, media, and contexts. They may choose from regularly offered courses in strategic, creative, or academic writing.

The Literature and Creative Writing minor offers discussion-oriented courses across a range of literary genres and themes, with a choice of emphasis on either literature, creative writing, or both. Students will learn to read and write literary art critically and creatively, with clarity and imagination, and with sensitivity to multi-cultural expressions of diversity.

Integrated with Chinese culture, students will learn all four types of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). After completing the Chinese Language minor, students will be able to communicate in Chinese at their targeted proficiency levels and think critically and creatively with global and multicultural awareness.

Program Overview

The B.S. program in Communication, Media, and Design (CMD) prepares graduates to communicate creatively across diverse multimedia and multicultural contexts. The program is geared toward students interested in literature, strategic and creative writing, media and communication studies, and graphic, interactive, and mixed-reality design. The curriculum is designed to train versatile and professional communicators across a range of media literacies, genres, and formats.

After Graduation
