Major: Music/GSAS dual
I decided to choose my majors because I’ve always had a huge passion for interactive audio and music. I’ve always been heavily involved with music growing up, playing instruments and joining groups, but also wanted to learn how to use music and sound to tell stories. I lacked the technological experience, which is a huge reason as to why I wanted to go to RPI. I wanted to learn how to record, edit, and work with sound in settings such as video games, interactive media, studio recordings, and live performance— all of which I’ve been able to participate in during my enrollment.
Favorite Class: My favorite classes have been Sound Recording & Production 1 & 2!! I love Professor Rice as an instructor, and in both classes you have access to work in DCC’s studio; including all of its microphones, equipment, and the school’s subscription to Avid Pro Tools. It’s a very engaging class series for people who want to learn the ins and outs of audio production and engineering, no matter your skill level. By finishing the SR&P1, you get officially certified to use the studio on your own!
Research: The summer of my Freshman year on campus, I got the opportunity to work full-time at EMPAC on research involving interactive audio and virtual reality (VR). I plan to work there full-time as an anudio engineer this upcoming fall on my ARCH away semester!
Advice: Don’t be intimidated to take a class if you aren’t familiar with the subject. You’ll be surprised with how many other students and professors are willing to help you out. It’s incredibly fun to be able to learn a new skill, not to mention rewarding!
