Biography
Fahmi Fahroji is a PhD candidate in Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research examines how people produce and contest knowledge about the ground beneath their feet. His dissertation studies how small-scale oil producers in Indonesia use their own knowledge and technologies to challenge state and industry expertise about the underground. He has also researched the scientific controversy over PFAS in biosolids applied to farmland in the US. He employs ethnographic, historical and broader qualitative methods, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Cultural Anthropology and a master's degree in Human Geography. Before RPI, he worked in policy research and advocacy in Indonesia. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, watching movies, and going to music gigs.
