Open-Rank Tenure Track Position – Philosophy and Ethics of AI/Machine Learning

The Cognitive Science Department in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is part of the search for an open-rank, tenure-track position at the intersection of Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) with an area of specialization in AI/ML ethics and ethics more broadly. The position begins August 2022.

Ideal candidates for this position will have substantial background in Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Ethics, with special expertise in AI/ML Ethics. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic for the opportunity to be a leader in campus conversations concerning the ethics of new and emerging technologies.

The successful candidate will have clear ideas how to involve students in their research and about possible sources of external funding. They will also either have an established track record of successful research and teaching (for a Full Professor or Associate Professor candidate) or show exceptional promise in these areas (Assistant Professor candidate). The ideal candidate will have experience with technical or formal work in machine ethics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign degree equivalent at the time of appointment.

Rensselaer’s Cognitive Science Department offers undergraduate programs in Cognitive Science, Philosophy, and Psychological Science, a M.S. degree in Cognitive Science, and a Ph.D. degree in Cognitive Science.

The application process is a rolling one, with the applicant pool being reviewed multiple times per semester. For consideration for a Fall 2022 appointment, applications should be received no later than December 1, 2021.
