This talk draws from my new project on the social and political history of the Arecibo Observatory (AO). It aims, first, to briefly share the scholarship from the history and sociology of science that is influencing my thinking about the project — namely, how infrastructure studies and Latin American STS can expand Big Science histories to account for the contextually embedded and geopolitical dimensions of large research facilities — and why I think this framing is important. This leaves questions as to what it means when, in the words of an informant, “we abandon these facilities without thought.”
