Abstract: Given worries about epistemic violence and injustice against disabled people in technology research, how do we do better? How do we set up technological research to learn from and honor disabled expertise? This talk takes us through the impetus and set up of disability-forward technology consulting. We begin by looking at disabled critiques of technology, trials in setting things up to get disabled feedback, ideas for setting up disability-forward research, and then we discuss real examples of disability consulting sessions set up by Shew through the DisCoTec Center. Throughout the talk, we keep an eye toward values of disabled people with respect to technology, epistemic justice, and improving research processes to be more just. We end in talking about other projects that are attempting to bring disabled expertise into technological research.
