The Department of Science and Technology Studies in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Senior Lecturer or Professor of Practice position focused on Law and Society. Rensselaer’s STS Department offers a Ph.D. and three undergraduate B.S. degrees: Science, Technology and Society; Design, Innovation & Society; and Sustainability Studies. The candidate must be prepared to teach large introductory lecture courses focused on law and society, as well as small Communication Intensive courses. The candidate must have the experience and contacts necessary to play a lead role in in the long-running STS course “Public Service Internship,” which depends on organizational contacts where students can serve as interns (at the NYS Attorney General’s Office, the Red Cross, or Troy City Hall, for example). The candidate must also be prepared to develop and run a robust prelaw program at Rensselaer, advising students in an accelerated law program as well as though those going through (or considering) a regular law school application process.

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D., JD, or Foreign Degree Equivalent in Anthropology, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Law, or a related field. Candidates should have an rich record of professional practice relevant to the position, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. Ability to interact effectively with faculty in a broadly inclusive department is important, as is ability to effectively engage students and faculty from other disciplines, particularly in science and engineering.
