Language-Endowed Intelligent Agents (LEIA) Laboratory

41 9th St.

The Language-Endowed Intelligent Agents (LEIA) Lab works on a variety of topics related to developing knowledge-based, explanatory, computational models of human cognitive functioning. Under the direction of Sergei Nirenberg and Marge McShane, the emphasis is on integrating language understanding with reasoning and decision-making, on the one hand, and with other modes of perception on the other.

Foci of study include the semantic and pragmatic interpretation of language; the treatment of reference and ellipsis; goal- and plan-based reasoning; situational awareness; belief ascription and "mindreading"; and the acquisition and maintenance of knowledge resources, such as ontologies and lexicons.

LEIA collaborates with experts in such fields as medicine and robotics with the goal of developing intelligent agents with ever more diverse capabilities.
