Hypermedia/Hypertext Regional Conference
Radisson Hotel & Suites Kansas City-City Center

The Hypermedia/Hypertext area of the Midwest Popular Culture Association invites papers/panels on hypermedia art and fiction, hypertext theory, analysis of hypertext/hypermedia works, Internet studies, narrative studies within the area, and any other topics related to writing/publishing on the Internet. The conference will be held at the Radisson Hotel & Suites Kansas City in the center of Kansas City, MO, over the weekend of October 12-14, 2007.

Each individual paper/presentation should be designed to last approximately fifteen minutes. This will hopefully allow enough time for a productive discussion. More information about the conference can be found at www.mpcaaca.org. Please also note that presenters will be required to join either the Popular Culture Association or the American Culture Association prior to attending the conference, as well as pay a registration fee for the conference.

Jodi Forlizzi (Carnegie Mellon), "The Product Ecology: Understanding Social Product Use and Supporting Design Culture"

The field of Human-Computer Interaction has broadened its focus from usability issues surrounding one person interacting with one system to how systems situate socially and culturally among groups of people. Researchers in HCI have turned to qualitative, ethnographic research methods to understand the situations surrounding technology use. However, stripped from underlying theory, these methods can be prescriptive at best.

This talk introduces the Product Ecology Framework to 1) describe social product use, 2) provide a roadmap for choosing appropriate research methods, and 3) extend design culture withing HCI, by allowing for flexible, design-centered research planning and opportunity seeking.
